In October 2002, Telung Chang was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The tumors had spread from his eyeball area lymph nodes to his neck and abdominal areas, including his kidneys. Chemotherapy was quickly decided upon and treatments began on June 16, 2003.

After his first chemotherapy treatment, Telung lost not only his hair, but also his appetite. His health deteriorated quickly. He felt aching in his bones. His red and white blood cells went to an all-time low. Noticing Telung's condition, his Zen master told him to use an infrared massage bed to help him to recover from the side effects of chemotherapy.
